Great Teaching and Learning is Character Building

Our wonderful teachers have been fostering wonderful learning opportunities for our students. This has been built on a solid foundation of relationship – this is critical to the learning success. As we marked World Teacher’s Day last week I was struck by the commitment of our staff to our students; they have genuine care for them as people, for their learning journey, and for their wellbeing. Part of this care is ensuring that our students are well-prepared for life, including ensuring that their learning has a purpose beyond themselves. The learning includes the development of the necessary resilience to face difficulties - in learning and in the wider context of the world. And significantly, at our school, it also extends to the spiritual needs of our students and the comfort and joy found in knowing Jesus.

At our school we are growing our students to be highly capable in their learning, including the fostering of critical and creative thinking skills and developing their skills in collaboration and communication; and there are some exciting examples seen in our classrooms and beyond. If you’ve been reading our newsletter over the past two months, then you will have read about the successes of our debating teams – Year 9 and 10 making it to the quarter-finals! and our Vex robotics squad which represent just some of our co-curricular offerings, and you will also see the collaboration skills and service skills represented in the students of our Junior School who recently crafted a vegetable garden and our Year 9 and 10 Design and Technology students who have designed and built mud kitchens for the benefit of our Junior school students (soon to be implemented) and as a gift to some of our neighbouring pre-schools. Each of these examples is the character-building learning that our society needs. How exciting that we are doing this so well.

The skills and heart that are reflected in these examples are indicative of the real-world learning that our students are engaged in through their regular classes as well. I am impressed by our students and their teachers who are being taught that they have a responsibility for their learning and to care for others. Our teachers work hard to ensure that we provide excellent care for our students through the preparation of excellent teaching and learning and through relationship. This is in part our response to what Jesus says “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” I see this in action around our school in so many ways. Thank you and well done to our excellent staff and wonderful students. And thank you to our families who support us in this endeavour.

Praying for a rich week of learning.

Luna Bonita - Spanish Luncheon

Recently, Yr 9, 10 and 12 Spanish students immersed themselves in some Spanish culture at the restaurant Luna Bonita in Port Macquarie.

Spanish is the 2nd most widely spoken language in the world and one of the 21 countries where Spanish is the official language, is Mexico.

Carlos and Paula (owners) spoke Spanish to us all as we enjoyed some fantastic Mexican food and an atmosphere that tested our Spanish language. Students have been working hard all year to grasp this new language and having the opportunity to practise what they have learned, was extra special.

Well-Being Spaces for Students

At HCS we value creating spaces that help our students recharge and nurture their own wellbeing to be at their optimum to learn. Many students value and utilise this space by connecting with others in breaks and taking some quiet time in their busy day at school.

Mud Kitchens ready for play

The Year 9/10 Design and Technology students have been designing and building Mud Kitchens this semester with the intention of gifting them to primary classes and local childcare centres. The students have worked hard and are looking forward to being able to give them away for kids to enjoy.

We are seeking donations of any old kitchenware you don’t need that could add an element of fun and play to the kitchens. If you have old pots/pans or utensils gathering dust, we welcome any donations to be dropped at the school office by the 11th November.

2022 Debating Team Report

During Term 3, a number of Year 7 – 10 students formed debating teams and took part in the National Virtual Debating Competition. Teams from every Australian state were represented. This was the first time that we entered students into this prestigious competition.

Each team practiced their research and writing skills, building strengths in essential information synthesis and extraction. Additionally, delivering the information in a cohesive manner with a convincing voice and expression was refined by all team members.

Debate topics ranged from a school to community to global focus, requiring students to combine both their school learning and general knowledge and apply to the question.

Throughout this process, each student grew in confidence, communication skills, perseverance and grit. We are proud of every student who took part. They were prepared to step out of their comfort zone and push towards more challenging endeavours. Your determination to not give up and break through was truly admired by your peers and all staff.

Quarter Final round for our Stage 5 Debating Team

On Tuesday November 1, the Stage 5 debating team competed against Canberra Girls in the Quarter Final round of the virtual debating competition. The topic was 'That Australia should not trade with countries that have poor labour standards', and we were the negative team.

Our debaters did an excellent job of presenting and sustaining their case and narrowly lost by 3 points. Alex, Lillian, Will and Chris are to be congratulated for their wonderful effort.
